Taking care of these simple tasks around the house can save you money and make your living space more comfortable and effective. Even though not everyone has the gift of being a do-it-yourself enthusiast, these 5 items are easy and quick. You won’t have to call the pros for it!
1. Running Toilet
One of the most common and annoying problems in most bathrooms. Toilet flappers can be simply obstructed by the holding chain. If you use bleaching tablets, some of the residue can get lodged between the flapper and the hardware.
To find out hat the problem is, simply shut off the water supply, take the lid off the toilet tank and do a visual inspection. If nothing is in the way of the flapper and the seat, remove the flapper and see if it has become deformed. It is not uncommon for the rubber to lose its shape and not seal the opening properly. If this is the case, run down to the local hardware store with flapper in hand and purchase a replacement.
Make sure to take the old one with you so when you get there you won’t be wondering what type it is as there are many variations and your best bet is just replace with the same type you already have. Unless you want to spend the rest of the day fiddling with the toilet.
2. Loose handles on cabinets and doors.
Another nuisance that we often let go way too long. Simple grab your tool box, whip out that screw driver, hammer and pliers just in case. Spend 10 minutes going around the house and tightening those knobs you know are loose, and have been bugging you for a while. Loose faucet knobs in bathrooms and kitchen faucets are quite common and can cause leaks.
3. Squeaky door hinges
Stop those creaking doors! It is a simple fix. You can use either WD40 to lubricate or a puff of powdered graphite to take care of business. A small trivia question. Do you know what the the “WD” in WD40 stands for? Answer: Water Displacement. In fact the name is actually Water Displacement Formula 40. That was the lab name for this compound that was found to displace water and prevent rust in metals. The formula has become widely used for many other uses, in fact you can find 287 uses for WD40 right here.
4. Leaky Faucets.
We have all had them at one time or another. Some of us still do!! In California and other arid areas, that should be against the law! Leaky faucets and toilets account for millions of gallons of wasted water. Water we desperately need. Fixing a leaky faucet many times is as simple as replacing a washer, or tightening the screws that hold the knobs together. Turn off the water to the faucet first, remove the offending part, if you need to replace, go to the hardware store and bring the piece with you. Repairs are often simple and inexpensive. If it’s time to replace the whole thing.. it can usually be done a cheaper if you do it yourself than if you pay a pro.
5. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors.
Make it a habit of replacing batteries on these once a year. Pick a holiday, that will help make it easier to remember when you are due to replace the batteries. If you pick one such as 4th of July, you will likely get a 3 day weekend and you can lump that one task along with replacing the air conditioner filters and still spend less than 10 minutes on each job, all the while making your home safer for you and your family.
As you can see, the list is simple, definitely not overwhelming. One task a day will knock out these simple fixes in less than a week.
